Gov. Perry: Fed up Texans might soon want to secede

Texans are fed up with federal tax policies, and might get so fed up that they decide they want to secede from the union, Gov. Rick Perry told reporters today after he attended an anti-tax tea party rally in Austin. He said the federal government has gone somewhat astray from what our founders wanted and he believes the federal government is choking Americans with excessive spending and taxation.

And although Perry made it clear he doesn't see the need to secede and isn't advocating for that, he said there's no question that's on the mind of some Texans. That was obvious at tea parties around the state, where "Secede" was a popular slogan on signs.

"Texas is a unique place," he said. "When we came into the union in 1845, one of the issues was that we would be able to leave if we decided to do that.

"My hope is that America and Washington in particular pays attention," he said. "We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot.”

At a tea party rally in Austin City Hall, chants of "Secede" could be heard during speeches.

According to the press release posted on Governor Perry's website:

Gov. Perry Backs Resolution Affirming Texas’ Sovereignty Under 10th Amendment

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today joined state Rep. Brandon Creighton and sponsors of House Concurrent Resolution (HCR) 50 in support of states’ rights under the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

“I believe that our federal government has become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of our citizens, and its interference with the affairs of our state,” Gov. Perry said. “That is why I am here today to express my unwavering support for efforts all across our country to reaffirm the states’ rights affirmed by the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I believe that returning to the letter and spirit of the U.S. Constitution and its essential 10th Amendment will free our state from undue regulations, and ultimately strengthen our Union.”

A number of recent federal proposals are not within the scope of the federal government’s constitutionally designated powers and impede the states’ right to govern themselves. HCR 50 affirms that Texas claims sovereignty under the 10th Amendment over all powers not otherwise granted to the federal government.

It also designates that all compulsory federal legislation that requires states to comply under threat of civil or criminal penalties, or that requires states to pass legislation or lose federal funding, be prohibited or repealed.

How many other Americans are getting fed up with Liberals working to destroy everything that made America a great nation?

How many other Americans are getting fed up with Liberals trying to force their liberal agenda and social beliefs on the rest of America?

How many other Americans have had enough of law-giver judges and their unconstitutional rulings, unconstitutionally changing our laws, and "de facto" amending the very Constitution that was intended to protect our rights and freedoms?

Will Obama's Department of Homeland Security designate the entire state of Texas as a terrorist state... or "nation"?

Will Texas secede from the union?   Not today, but...

Don't mess with Texas!

  1. You had to think that Texas would be the first state to stomp it's foot down and say, "NO MAS"!

We watched much of the coverage from DC, Sacramento, San Antonio and Atlanta on Fox. We also surfed around on CNN and MSNBC, as well as the 3 major networks during the dinner hour. MSNBC, as would be expected, was denigrating the movement as a right-wing kook flash-in-the-pan phenomenon. CNN and the networks barely mentioned it at all, and only in a negative light.

The news is reporting this morning that there was also a large rally on the statehouse steps in Indianapolis. I heard some preliminary estimates of more that 2,300 rallies nationwide with total attendance over a million. The little town of Huntington, Indiana, about 25 miles from us (population around 11,000, I think) had 400 people show up on a cold, misty day. PEOPLE ARE PISSED!.

Virtually all of the media except Fox is trying to paint this as the right wing fringe, most of whom have gotten a tax cut, protesting about higher taxes. I think most thinking people know in their gut that higher taxes are coming, but these rallies weren't about taxes for the most part; they were about out-of-control government in general and out-of-control spending in particular. They were about letting the administration and politicians of both parties that they work for us, not the other way around. This is not going away, with another round of rallies planned for the 4th of July.
